How to convert an image in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Open your image

Drop it on the editor, click to choose a file, or paste it with Ctrl+V (⌘+V on a Mac). JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF (first frame), BMP and iPhone HEIC photos open in any browser. Drop several files to convert up to 50 at once.

  2. 2

    Choose JPG, PNG or WebP

On the Convert tab, pick the format; each one says what it’s good for. Going from a transparent image to JPG? Choose the color under Fill transparent parts with (white to start).

  3. 3

    Download

Check the new file size under the preview, then press Download or Copy. For a smaller JPG or WebP, set the quality or a target size on the Compress tab.

What the image converter does

Updated 2026-11-03

Opens
JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF (first frame only), BMP and HEIC/HEIF (iPhone photos), in every browser. Safari reads HEIC itself; other browsers use the open-source libheif decoder, which also runs in your browser.
Saves
JPG, PNG or WebP; not HEIC or AVIF. WebP also works in Safari, through a built-in WebP encoder. The editor starts in your file’s own format (HEIC, AVIF, GIF and BMP start as JPG, or PNG if transparent), so pick the new one on the Convert tab.
Several images
Up to 50 at once: pick one format for all, or Keep each file’s format, which keeps JPG, PNG and WebP and turns HEIC, AVIF, GIF and BMP into JPG (PNG if transparent). Download each one, or all as one ZIP.
Transparency
Kept in PNG and WebP. JPG has none, so transparent parts are filled with the color you pick: white, a preset or any color.
Backgrounds
Converting to PNG doesn’t remove a background; it only keeps transparency that is already there. To cut a subject out, use Remove Background (a paid tool, pay per image).
Quality
JPG and WebP are lossy and use the Quality slider on the Compress tab (85% by default); JPGs are written with MozJPEG for smaller files. PNG with All colors keeps every pixel; fewer colors (256 to 32) is lossy. Converting doesn’t change the pixel size.
Camera and location data
The converted file is re-encoded, so camera data and GPS location (EXIF) are removed, and the result says so.
Largest image
About 16.7 megapixels on iPhone and iPad (Safari) and 50 megapixels on other devices. A bigger image is opened at a smaller size, and the editor tells you so.
Nothing is uploaded: how to check
Open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab and convert an image: no upload request is sent. The site still counts page views; those never include your image.

JPG, PNG or WebP: which format when

  • JPG for photos you upload or send. It makes small files and works almost everywhere, but it has no transparency and is lossy.
  • PNG for logos, screenshots, text, and cut-outs with a transparent background. With all colors it keeps every pixel exactly, so photos come out large. For graphics, 256 colors (under Colors on the Compress tab) makes it much smaller, with transparency kept; that is lossy, and photos can show banding.
  • WebP for small files with transparency, and for websites you control. It is lossy like JPG at the usual settings, and smaller: 21–47% smaller than JPG in our test. Check that the site you upload to accepts it.

The table on this page shows which formats Etsy, Amazon, eBay, Shopify, X, Pinterest and others list on their own help pages.

HEIC to JPG in any browser

iPhones usually save photos as HEIC, which many sites and apps don’t accept. Open the photo here and it starts as JPG: press Download and you have a file that uploads almost anywhere. This works in every browser, on Windows, Android, Mac or iPhone. Safari reads HEIC itself; in Chrome, Edge and Firefox the page uses libheif, an open-source HEIC decoder that runs in your browser, so the photo still never leaves your device.

The photo is shown upright, following the camera’s rotation flag, and the JPG is written without camera data or GPS location. PNG and WebP work too; HEIC can’t be saved as HEIC here. For a page that starts in JPG, with the iPhone and Windows settings explained, use HEIC to JPG.

PNG to JPG: much smaller files

Converting a PNG photo to JPG is usually the quickest way to make it small enough to upload. In our test on November 3, 2026, five PNGs made by AI models came out 89–97% smaller as JPG at 85%: a 7.58 MB Nano Banana 2.1 image became 798 KB, and a 1.46 MB GPT Image 2.5 image 122 KB. The JPGs are written with MozJPEG, an open-source encoder that made them 10–30% smaller than the browser’s own encoder at the same setting.

If the PNG has transparent parts, they are filled with a color, white unless you pick another. To also hit a size such as 1 MB or 200 KB, use Compress Image.

JPG to PNG won’t make the background transparent

Many people convert a JPG to PNG hoping the background will disappear. It won’t: a JPG has no transparency, and converting keeps every pixel as it is, background included. PNG only keeps transparency that is already there.

To cut the subject out, use Remove Background. It returns a transparent PNG at the same pixel size, and it is a paid tool, priced per image. Converting JPG to PNG does help when you want to edit the image further without adding more JPG loss each time you save.

WebP to JPG: when a site doesn’t take WebP

Many websites serve their images as WebP because the files are smaller, so a picture you save from a page often turns out to be WebP. Some upload forms and older apps won’t accept it: Etsy, LinkedIn and YouTube thumbnails, for example, don’t list WebP. Convert it to JPG, or to PNG if it has transparent parts, and it will upload.

Convert many images at once

Drop or choose up to 50 files together, pick JPG, PNG or WebP on the Convert tab (the fill color and quality apply to all of them too), and press Apply to all. Then download each file, or all of them as one ZIP; file names are kept, and duplicates are numbered.

Made the image on zzo.ai? Press Resize or compress (free) under the result to open it here; nothing is uploaded again. The AI image generator is pay per generation, with no subscription. To change the pixel size, use Resize Image; to change the shape, Crop Image.

When a result goes wrong

The usual problems, why they happen and what to change.

Transparent areas turned white, or another color

Why: JPG can’t store transparency, so the transparent parts are filled with the color under Fill transparent parts with.

Fix: Save as PNG or WebP to keep transparency, or pick the fill color you want before downloading the JPG.

The background is still there after converting to PNG

Why: Changing the format keeps every pixel as it is; it can’t tell the subject from the background.

Fix: Use Remove Background to cut the subject out as a transparent PNG.

The PNG is much bigger than the JPG

Why: PNG with all colors keeps every pixel exactly, which makes photos large: several times the size of a JPG.

Fix: Use JPG or WebP for photos. For logos, screenshots and cut-outs that must stay PNG, pick 256 under Colors on the Compress tab.

A site won’t take my WebP

Why: Not every site accepts WebP: Etsy, LinkedIn and YouTube thumbnails don’t list it.

Fix: Convert it to JPG (or PNG if it has transparency) and upload that.

An iPhone photo (HEIC) won’t open

Why: HEIC opens in every browser here, but this file couldn’t be read. It may be damaged, or not really a HEIC despite its name.

Fix: Export the photo from Photos as JPG and open that, or try another copy of the file.

Questions

Updated 2026-11-03

How do I convert WebP to JPG?

Open the WebP file, click JPG on the Convert tab, and press Download. If the WebP has transparent parts, choose the fill color under Fill transparent parts with first.

How do I convert PNG to JPG without losing quality?

Keep the Quality slider on the Compress tab at 85% or higher. JPG is lossy, so it always drops some fine detail, but at 85–90% a photo usually looks the same. The file gets much smaller: 89–97% smaller in our test with PNGs made by AI models.

Will converting JPG to PNG make the background transparent?

No. A JPG has no transparency, and changing the format can’t tell the subject from the background, so the PNG keeps the same background. To get a transparent background, use Remove Background.

What happens to transparency when I convert to JPG?

It is filled with a color, because JPG can’t store transparency. White is the default; pick a preset or any color under Fill transparent parts with. PNG and WebP keep transparency.

Is this image converter free? Do you upload my images?

It’s free, with no sign-up, no watermark, no ads and no daily limit. Nothing is uploaded: the image is converted in your browser. To check, watch the Network tab in the developer tools while you convert.

Which format gives the smallest file?

For photos, WebP, then JPG, then PNG. In our test, JPG at 85% was 89–97% smaller than the original PNG, and WebP at 80% was another 21–47% smaller than that JPG. A PNG with 256 colors was 53–72% smaller than the original, still far bigger than JPG for photos.

Which format should I use for Etsy, Amazon or Shopify?

JPG is the safe choice. Etsy lists JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG and HEIC; Amazon lists JPG, TIFF, PNG and GIF; Shopify also takes WebP. Etsy notes that transparent parts show black, so save a JPG with a fill color there. The table on this page has each list with its source.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG?

Open the HEIC photo; it starts as JPG, so just press Download. Camera data and GPS location are removed from the JPG. HEIC can also be saved as PNG or WebP, but not as HEIC.

Can I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows, Android or in Chrome?

Yes. HEIC opens in every browser here. Safari reads it itself; Chrome, Edge, Firefox and others use the open-source libheif decoder, which runs in your browser too, so the photo is still not uploaded. Nothing to install.

Can I convert AVIF, GIF or BMP?

Yes, they all open and can be saved as JPG, PNG or WebP. An animated GIF opens as its first frame only.

Can I save WebP on an iPhone?

Yes. Safari can’t write WebP on its own, so the editor uses a built-in WebP encoder there.

Does converting improve the quality of a JPG?

No. Saving a JPG as PNG keeps it exactly as it is from then on, but it can’t bring back detail the JPG already lost, and the file gets bigger.

Is converting the same as renaming the file extension?

No. Renaming photo.webp to photo.jpg leaves a WebP file with the wrong name, which some sites reject. Converting writes the image again in the new format.

Does converting change the image size?

Not the pixel size, unless you also resize or crop. The file size changes with the format and quality, and the result shows by how much.

Does converting remove EXIF and location data?

Yes. The new file is re-encoded, so camera data and GPS location are removed.

Can I convert many images at once?

Yes, up to 50. Drop or choose them together, pick JPG, PNG or WebP on the Convert tab (or Keep each file’s format), and press Apply to all. Download them one by one, or all as one ZIP: a quick way to turn a folder of HEIC photos into JPGs.
